Out of the Blue is a poetic fiction inspired by the tragic loss of the submarine HMS Thetis just before the onslaught of World War II. Our fictional protagonist is a young girl, Kathleen through whose eyes we see the tragedy unfold. On a beautiful summer’s day the brand new submarine headed out of the Mersey for its final tests and dives. Twice the usual complement of men were on board as everyone – submariners, engineers and fitters from Cammell Laird’s, Navy personnel and even two caterers who provided the lunch- wanted to see how she handled. A tiny speck of paint blocking a test-pipe was to trigger a seemingly unstoppable chain of events leading to the tragedy in which ninety-nine men would lose their lives and only four survive.

Out of the Blue has been a fantastic success for Rejects, confirming the company’s ability to present work for middle scale theatres. Our last big number was Rejects Canterbury Tales, which toured the UK in 2000. Out of the Blue equalled that show’s cast of seven adding an original soundscape and musical score together with video and projections to create a visually stunning and moving piece of theatre. The core creative team included director John Wright (co-artistic director of Told by an Idiot and co-founder of Trestle Theatre Company), award winning writer Andrea Earl (Lynda La Plante Award), composer Simon James, designer Michael Breakey and visual artist Mike Wight. The performers were: Nick Collett, Fionnuala Dorrity, Tim Hibberd, Sean Kearney, Ben O'Sullivan, Matthew Steer and Julie Walker.

After its week-long premiere at the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool in February 2005, Out of the Blue toured the UK for five weeks.
